Should I decide to scope my M1A it will get an SWFA 10x.
Here's a view through my SWFA 10x at TMP's 600 yard line. If the SWFA 16x was not up to snuff, it would not allow me to do this from 1000 yds and it sure would not take the beating of 8 yrs of hard shooting, I have easily 5K shot with this scope. This is done with my 16x SWFA super sniper scope mounted on a 3rd Generation Springfield mount (I inherited the mount and its done well but I could someday wander off to a Sadlak mount if issues arise from the SAI 3Gen mount).
#Lrb m14 mod
I can keep all my shots from 1000 yd line into the chest of a man size E type military silhouette target with Mk 316 Mod "O" ammunition (handloaded to that specification). I have a plane jane M1A (circa 1991) dropped into a M14E1 stock, and factory stock barrel and factory terrible trigger pull which soon to be fixed. For me, 16x has great utility and there is nothing more add on my views of SWFA scopes of their SS line. I will close by saying on most days when mirage builds, all my higher power optic equipped variable scopes get turned down to 16x to reduce mirage and in any conditions my SWFA 16x has no issues with mirage. I use my M1A as a range rifle, not in any CMP events so the SWFA scope entirely fits my requirements. I have other scopes on my long range rifles like Vortex, Leupold and they are outstanding but that 16x SWFA does the job with satisfaction, its brute tough, clear optics and it will stay on the M1A.
#Lrb m14 upgrade
I have seen no reason to upgrade my M1A with another brand / model or greater optical power scope. Of course one has to work a bit harder to do this at long ranges but my end result was mounting the 6x to my K31 Swiss rifle and use it 100 to 600 yds with total satisfaction. I was very much take aback when I looked thru it from 1000 yd line and saw how clear and most definitely viable if I wanted to shoot NRA/CMp long range bulls eye targets from any distance, I could easily do so. I mentioned the 6x SWFA which I won at a rifle match and my thoughts receiving it was what in blazes will I do with it. I will add that I did buy the 20x SWFA scope, and found the reticle difficult to use (old eyes) and the added 4x (over my 16x SWFA) to be meaningless at long range so I sold off the 20x. I like to shoot skeet birds and watch them bust on the bank at end of our range so the greater optical power lets me do that out to 1000 yds. Still, at 300 and beyond the 16x is great. I will admit the 16x is over kill at 300 yds and shorter distances so perhaps consider buying as much optical power in SWFA as you truly require. Now the debate might come into play how much optical power you require and I won't argue the 10x SWFA is entirely great for out to 600 yds and even a 6x SWFA does great as well. It has the elevation to go this far while most scopes require a 20 MOA rail. I opted for a 16x as my intention was to shoot out to 1000 yds and this fixed power scope has been outstanding for this purpose. In that price range for target shooting nothing else comes close.īoth of these gents has offered solid advice, same advice given me 8 yrs ago and I have had great performance from SWFA SS (super sniper) scope on my M1A.
